Your Love And Wish About Ektron CMS

In my current job, I have to handle various projects run on Ektron CMS. Just like other content management systems, it too have functions and features which I love and some I do not like at all. We all now in every thing or activity there will be pros and cons. The same is for our own Ektron CMS400.NET. Anyway, I would like to say that I really enjoy working with this content management system with so many smart features in it. I would like to say that I really love two features of this CMS and I wish I could add one to make it unique.

I love to access entire history of pages and content

Do you know which feature of Ektron I like the most? HISTORY. It is a feature which I use quite often. It is helpful for what it is made for. I can check history of content updates, that is, when the website content was last updated by whom and check whether any relevant comments are available with the same click. You can compare the current and the previous versions and do necessary modifications if required. Here are two scenarios of how we can use HISTORY:

Scenario 1 - If you edit and publish a content block, but the results are not what you expected, simply revert back to the previous version and start again. Also, comparing the two versions might help you figure out where things went awry.

Scenario 2 - If you update a content block to include a special message or promo, simply revert to the previous version when the promotional period is over.

Scenario 3 - If this year’s conference schedule is more similar to the conference from two years ago than it is to last year’s, go ahead and revert to the 2013 version to use as your starting template. You do have the opportunity to edit any version before making it live again.

I love the ability to make fresh content live even if I am not there

One of the most powerful tools in Ektron is scheduling. It allows to set start or/and end dates for fresh website content and content edits. Here is how you can use this wonderful feature:

Scenario 1 - If you have a news release that needs to go live to coincide with a news conference, but you will be off site at the news conference, simply schedule the release to go live the exact minute you need it to.

Scenario 2 - If you post a special announcement on your website about a promotion that expires August 15, schedule the content to expire and be removed from your website on the expiration date. This will help keep your site up to date, but you only have to touch the content once.

Scenario 3 - If your early bird registration is ending at the end of the week, get ahead of the game by editing your content to reflect the new registration fees and scheduling the edits to go live on the date they become effective. This can be an effective time management tool if you have some days that are busier than others.

Finally, I wish there was no such undo button for deleted items

I think one of the most common issues among our clients is accidentally deleting items or data or even content. Folks delete entire folders when they intended to delete a single item; they delete entire menus when they simply wanted to remove one thing. In fact, I often tell my clients that it’s hard to really mess up something unless you delete it.

In Ektron, once you delete something, it is gone forever. At least it may as well be. The only way to restore the deleted item is to restore your entire website database, and of course that is assuming you have a backup.

There have been feature requests for things like an “undo” button and/or a recycle bin that works a lot like Windows. That is, nothing is deleted permanently until you empty the bin. Perhaps this is something Ektron will consider and implement in the near future.

A Modern CMS For Drupal Developers

When you think of any modern open source content management system (CMS), one name comes automatically in the first place and that is Drupal. This content management system holds a firm position in the CMS market. Since years it has been the most preferred name in content management system for designing and developing high web traffic websites. Websites like Twitter built on Drupal platform has enough proof of its robustness. Statistics portray that almost 1.5 million of websites which are now online are developed in Drupal platform. Out of all websites built on open source content management systems, Drupal has been utilized to design 8% of them. The said CMS is a clear winner in the content management system arena for quite some time now. We expect that the latest version, Drupal 8, will also continue the winning streak as its previous versions.

Drupal is widely renowned for their innovative technology and we have seen that with every Drupal versions some new features are added to make the task of website development much easier than before. The content managemenet system, today, is quite popular in the market. Drupal 7 was used to build almost 56% of websites. The fact speaks all!

In such a scenario, Drupal 8 has caught a lot of attention from developers and all circles of website related technologies and businesses. The transition from Drupal 7 to 8 was smooth and people who were first made aware of all updates are Drupal developers who actually work on this CMS to create smart websites. Anticipations are rising and we all want to know everything about the upgrades and modifications made. There are features which will make the content management system popular among Drupal developers and open source CMS lovers.

Here we will discuss about the changes made in the latest version of Drupal which will make this CMS a darling for developers.

Configuration Management

People who have used Drupal 7 might have faced hardships in migration from development server to production server. The primary reason for this is that in Drupal, configurations and content are both stored in a database table. When you make any change in the configuration and try to push the same into production server, the content is found to be overridden.

In order to tackle this problem, Drupal 8 has been introduced with a new and innovative configuration management system. This new system provides Drupal developers with the flexibility so that they can observe and control all the changes they want to make and push them to the production chamber.

Object Oriented Programming

With the lastest version of Drupal content management system, Drupal developers will be able to work on an object oriented approach. Most features of this CMS is actually based on Object Oriented Programming paradigm. The change is a reflection of the result of a huge internal debate in the Drupal fraternity on Object Oriented Programming vs. Procedural Programming. This system actually has made the task of Drupal developers quite easy and hence they are comfortable using this open source CMS for multiple website development projects. They can now customize modules and change the behavious of the content management system as per their convenience.

New Highly Improved APIs and More Libraries

Drupal 8 is loaded with new fronted libraries such as Backbone. It is integrated with core Drupal. This CMS also incorporates most of its components from PHP community which helps it in becoming flexible and attains the power for developers who can create their own modules with great robustness.

With so many functionalities, one might start worrying about the usages of Drupal 8. Many people are thinking that in spite of smart features, this new version might not help Drupal developers in the long run. But believe me, this modern and smart content management system with so many tools and modules will be a great play for developers. It is already creating buzz in the CMS market and developers will have a first hand experience with it.

Responsive Mobile Website Development And Applications

There was a time when building a website meant first defining your canvas. What did the latest browser stats tell you about your visitors? Were low resolution monitors being sufficiently crowded out by those seductive widescreen monitors? In the bad old days, we would make the decision—usually arbitrarily as the web browser stats are so wide ranging — we will make it a static 960 pixels wide. That will fit nicely onto those old folks’ monitors still running at a 1024×768 resolution and leave a few pixels to spare. We would not to crowd the edges too terribly much.

But we are shifting into a new generation of website development. The trend actually started several years ago. As the smartphone and tablets became more and more ubiquitous, developers began looking for ways to deliver better experiences for mobile devices. For a while these took the shape of detecting a mobile device and sending them to another website that was stripped down, removing much of the website’s functionality and aesthetic appeal. It usually was not pretty, but it did the job. It allowed mobile users to access information with ease.

Enter to the world of responsive mobile website development

Then web browsers caught up. Several years ago, most modern web browsers reached a level of technological consistency that allowed for developers to build one website, with one set of content and show it to virtually any sized device and simple change the way the content is presented, simply by specifying specific style sheets.

It sounds simple. Almost too simple. And for all intents and purposes, it is. Mobile responsive design simply looks at the various common device sizes and says, “OK, you are a smartphone. I am going to go ahead make this block of text narrower, remove this thing that will just mess things up if we leave it in place and we will take this thing and center it and make it a little bit wider so that it all looks nicer for you.” The best is: it is all handled by the web browser. And unless you manually adjust your screen width or orientation, you’ll never know.

Creating responsive websites and mobile apps

Since mobile responsive design really took hold, there have been numerous frameworks that have been developed that make creating a mobile responsive website quick and easy to develop. The larger and most popular frameworks are designed with many common user interface elements built-in, requiring a developer to overlay their own custom styling to fit the custom design. Most frameworks also come with out of the box with functionality to ensure the vast majority of functionality works on older web browsers, so that your uncle running MS Windows can still see your brand new website, almost how you intended it.

Some of the popular frameworks used for developing websites and apps are:

  • Foundation
  • Bootstrap
  • Skeleton
  • Gumby Framework
  • HTML5 Boilerplate
  • Less Framework

There are dozens of frameworks as well as simplified templates that can get you setup with a basic structure that will allow you to easily and quickly develop mobile-responsive websites and applications. Choosing the right framework will depending greatly from project to project. Some frameworks come with a large amount of interface elements and components, while others are really just basic layouts and grids used to build a site from the ground up. It all depends on finding the right tool for the job.

With so many growth trends, it is us who have to make sure the concept of mobile website development become important in today's business world. We have already seen the rise in the number of developing mobile-friendly websites which are actually beneficial for both clients and business owners.
